Project - A South Indian Residential Interior
Area - 4000 sq ft
Date of completion - December 2023
Location - Chennai, India
This 4000 square foot home has been designed for a young couple and their child, which beautifully marries South Indian cultural elements with contemporary design. The husband, with his Kannadiga background, and the wife, rooted in Tamil heritage, wanted a home that reflects both their identities. The design incorporates traditional South Indian materials and motifs, seamlessly integrated into a modern aesthetic.
Cultural integration - At the heart of the home, the puja room features Athangudi tiles from Tamil Nadu and the adaptive reuse of a family heirloom - a finely crafted Mysore teak puja unit, creating a serene and authentic space for worship.
We have reimagined traditional stories and symbols in a modern context. For instance, one of the custom wallpapers depicts a unique interpretation of the Ramayana, blending storytelling with contemporary art. Throughout the home, brass statues are elegantly framed and embedded into wall paneling, while luxurious fabrics in warm tones add depth and richness to the interiors. This project exemplifies how traditional South Indian elements can be thoughtfully reinterpreted to create a contemporary home that feels both culturally significant and current.
